St. Patrick’s Day Green Tea Truffles

Every year when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around, I love finding creative ways to celebrate with festive treats. While traditional Irish recipes are always a hit, sometimes I like to add a unique twist to my holiday desserts. That’s how these Green Tea Treasure Truffles were born! They’re a perfect blend of rich cream cheese, sweet vanilla, and earthy matcha, all wrapped in a smooth white chocolate shell. Not only do they look stunning in their vibrant green hue, but they also have a deliciously creamy texture that melts in your mouth.

If you’re a fan of matcha (like me!), these truffles will quickly become a favorite. The slight bitterness of the green tea perfectly balances the sweetness of the white chocolate, creating an irresistible flavor combination. Plus, they’re incredibly easy to make! A little mixing, rolling, and dipping, and you’ll have a batch of decadent, bite-sized treats ready to impress. Whether you’re sharing them at a St. Paddy’s Day party or just treating yourself, these truffles are guaranteed to bring a little luck and a lot of joy.

And let’s not forget the fun part – decorating! A drizzle of green-tinted chocolate or a dusting of matcha powder makes these truffles even more magical. I love watching the transformation from simple ingredients into these beautiful, festive gems.

Ingredients

For the truffles:

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened – Creates a rich, creamy base for these indulgent truffles.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar – Adds sweetness and helps achieve a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • 2/3 teaspoon matcha powder – Infuses the truffles with a delicate earthy flavor and vibrant green hue.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract – Enhances the sweetness with a warm, aromatic depth.
  • Green food coloring (gel works best) – Intensifies the festive green color, making these truffles perfect for St. Paddy’s Day.

For the coating:

  • 2 ½ cups white chocolate melts or shredded white chocolate – Forms a smooth, creamy shell that complements the matcha flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional, for smoother drizzle) – Helps thin the chocolate for an even, glossy coating.
  • Optional, to garnish: a pinch of matcha powder – A final dusting of matcha adds a beautiful touch and an extra hint of green tea flavor.

Recipe Instructions

You can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

For the green filling:

1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.

2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, matcha powder and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined and smooth.

3. Add green food coloring, starting with a few drops, and mix until the filling turns a vibrant green. Adjust the color as needed.

4. Scoop the mixture into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter) and place them on a rack or parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.

For the white chocolate coating:

1. Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate.

2. If you want to decorate your truffles with green drizzling, reserve some of the melted white chocolate and mix with the green food coloring, adding a few drops each time until you reach your desired shade of green.

3. Remove the green filling balls from the freezer.

4. Using a fork, toothpick or dipping tool, dip each frozen ball into the melted white chocolate, letting the excess drip off. Place the coated truffles back on the rack or parchment paper. Repeat with all the truffles.

5. Optionally sprinkle with a pinch of matcha powder. It helps if the coating is still a bit warm, this way the matcha powder will stick to the surface better.

6. If you are using the green melted chocolate to decorate the truffles, dip a teaspoon into the mixture and drizzle over the truffles in a zig-zag pattern.

7. Let the white chocolate coating set completely, either at room temperature or in the refrigerator for faster results.

You end up with this beautiful green hue when you take a bite – perfect for St. Patrick’s Day!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I make these truffles ahead of time?
Absolutely! These truffles store well in the refrigerator for up to one week in an airtight container. You can also freeze them for up to three months – just thaw them in the fridge before serving.

2. Do I have to use matcha powder?
Matcha gives these truffles their unique flavor and natural green color, but if you’re not a fan, you can omit it. The truffles will still be delicious, just with a more vanilla-forward taste.

3. What kind of white chocolate should I use?
For the smoothest coating, I recommend using high-quality white chocolate melts or chopped white chocolate bars. White chocolate chips can work, but they don’t always melt as smoothly. Adding a teaspoon of coconut oil can help create a silkier coating.

4. Can I make these truffles without food coloring?
Yes! The matcha powder naturally adds a light green hue, but but if you prefer a bolder color without food dye, try using natural green food coloring made from spirulina or spinach extract.

5. How do I prevent the white chocolate from cracking?
Cracking usually happens when the filling is too cold. Let the truffle centers sit at room temperature for a minute or two before dipping them in the melted chocolate. This helps prevent a temperature shock that can cause cracks.

6. My melted white chocolate is too thick. What should I do?
If your chocolate seems too thick for dipping, stir in ½ to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening to thin it out. Avoid adding water, as it will cause the chocolate to seize up.

7. Can I use dark chocolate instead of white chocolate?
Definitely! If you prefer a richer contrast to the matcha filling, dark or milk chocolate will work beautifully. Just note that it won’t have the same festive St. Paddy’s green-and-white look.

8. How do I get the perfect drizzle on top?
For a clean and professional drizzle, dip a spoon into the green-colored melted chocolate and quickly move it back and forth over the truffles in a zig-zag motion. You can also use a small piping bag or a ziplock bag with a tiny corner snipped off for more control.
