You can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
1. Start by heat treating the cake mix. Spread the cake mix evenly on the parchment paper and place it in the oven on 350 degrees for 5 minutes. Then set it aside to cool.

2. Place the heat treated funfetti cake mix, butter, vanilla extract, and milk in a mixing bowl then mix it until combined and forms a ball.

3. Use a spoon or ice cream scoop to scoop out about 1 1/2 -2 tablespoons of the funfetti mixture at a time.
4. Roll the funfetti scoops in your clean or gloved hands to make a ball shape, then continue to roll the ball into an oval. This will be the baby chick’s body.

5.Place the oval on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat until you have used all of the funfetti mixture.

6. Put the ovals in the freezer for 10-12 minutes. So they keep their shape.
7. Next place the yellow melting chocolate in a microwave safe bowl, heat them in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until they are liquid and smooth.
8. Dip each oval in the yellow chocolate, scrape the excess and place it back on the parchment paper to harden.

9. Dip the black round sprinkles in the remaining yellow chocolate and put two sprinkles in the area you want the baby chick’s eyes to be.

10. Warm the orange chocolate melts following the same directions as above.
11. Dip the pretzel bows in the chocolate scrape off the excess and place them on the parchment paper.

12. While the chocolate pretzels are still wet place the yellow ovals on top them.

13. Put the remaining orange chocolate in a piping bag (you may have to warm the chocolate again before bagging).

14. Cut a tiny hole in the bag and pipe a small orange triangle under the eyes to create the chick’s beak.

15. Once the beaks are dry, Serve and Enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Baby Chick Funfetti Truffles
-
Heat Treat Your Cake Mix – Make sure to heat treat the cake mix by baking it in the oven for 5 minutes at 350°F. This step ensures that the mix is safe to eat without needing to be fully baked into a cake, and it also helps with the texture of the truffles.
-
Work With Room Temperature Ingredients – For smooth and easy mixing, use room temperature butter and milk. This ensures everything comes together smoothly without any clumps.
-
Chill the Truffles Before Coating – After shaping your funfetti balls, chill them in the freezer for 10-12 minutes. This helps them hold their shape when you dip them in the yellow chocolate, preventing them from getting too soft.
-
Use a Spoon or Ice Cream Scoop for Uniform Sizes – To ensure all your chicks are the same size, use a spoon or ice cream scoop to measure out the funfetti mixture before rolling them into oval shapes. This will also help you get consistent results.
-
Don’t Overheat Your Chocolate – When melting your chocolate, be sure to heat it in small intervals (30 seconds at a time) and stir between each. Overheating can cause the chocolate to seize up and become hard to work with.
-
Add a Crunch with Extra Sprinkles – If you like a little crunch in your truffles, try adding some extra sprinkles into the funfetti mixture. This gives your truffles a delightful texture boost!
-
Be Careful with Chocolate Temperature – When dipping the truffles in chocolate, make sure it’s warm, but not too hot. Overheated chocolate can cause cracks in the coating when it solidifies.
-
Use Tweezers for Precise Placement – For small details like the eyes and the pretzel bows, using a pair of tweezers helps you place everything exactly where you want it without making a mess.
-
Store Properly for Freshness – To keep your truffles fresh, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 2 days, or in the fridge for up to 4 days. They’re best enjoyed within the first few days but will last a little longer if stored properly.
-
Get Creative with Decoration – Feel free to add more sprinkles or other fun decorations to customize your baby chicks. They’re the perfect canvas for a colorful and whimsical treat!

Get Creative!
-
Add Colorful Sprinkles to the Mix – Boost the fun factor by mixing in rainbow sprinkles directly into the funfetti dough. It’ll make the inside just as colorful and exciting as the outside!
-
Try Different Shapes – While the oval chick shape is adorable, you can experiment with different shapes for your truffles. How about little bunny-shaped truffles for Easter or mini egg-shaped ones for an extra touch?
-
Use Different Colors of Chocolate – Don’t limit yourself to yellow and orange! You could try using pink or blue melting chocolate for a playful twist, making your truffles even more vibrant.
-
Switch Up the Toppings – Instead of just pretzel bows, try using mini pretzel sticks or even small candy pieces for wings. Or get really creative with tiny candy eyes for a fun and quirky look.
-
Add Fun Filling – For an extra surprise inside, consider adding a small piece of candy, a marshmallow, or a mini chocolate chip in the center before rolling them into balls. This will give each bite a fun twist!
-
Make Them Into Mini Chicks in Nests – You could create a little nest by adding some edible “nesting” material, like shredded coconut or chocolate shavings, around each truffle for a cute presentation.
-
Customize for Holidays – Adapt your truffles to match the season or upcoming holidays! For instance, make red, white, and blue chicks for a patriotic celebration, or add festive sprinkles to match the holiday’s theme.
-
Create a Chick Family – Make a whole “family” of chicks by using different colored chocolate coatings for the baby chicks, making them a diverse, colorful family unit!
-
Mini Egg Accents – Add small candy-coated chocolate eggs around your truffles for a playful touch that fits perfectly with the baby chick theme.
-
Decorate with Edible Glitter – To make these little chicks sparkle, dust them with some edible glitter after they’ve been coated in chocolate for a magical, festive finish!
Serving & Storing
-
Keep Them in an Airtight Container – Store your truffles in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. This will keep them fresh and ensure the chocolate coating remains smooth and firm.
-
Refrigerate for Longer Storage – If you want to keep them for a bit longer, store the truffles in the fridge for up to 4 days. Just make sure they’re in a sealed container to prevent the chocolate from absorbing any moisture or odors.
-
Freeze for Extended Storage – For longer storage, freeze your truffles! Place them in an airtight container or freezer bag with parchment paper between layers, and they’ll keep for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, simply thaw them in the fridge for a few hours before serving.
-
Avoid Overcrowding – If you need to store a lot of truffles, make sure they’re not overcrowded in the container. Leave a little space between them to avoid any smudging of the chocolate coating.
-
Don’t Forget the Decorations – If you’ve added sprinkles or decorative toppings, try to store your truffles in a way that prevents them from getting crushed or smeared.
