Red, White, and Blue Pretzel Rods Perfect for Summer Celebrations
When summer rolls around, I’m always looking for easy and festive treats to bring to BBQs and family get-togethers. These Red, White, and Blue Pretzel Rods have quickly became one of my favorites! They’re colorful, simple to make, and they always seem to disappear faster than I can set them out on the table.
I love that you don’t need any fancy equipment to pull these off, just a few bowls, some candy melts, and plenty of sprinkles. The kids usually jump in to help too, which makes it even more fun (and sometimes a little more messy, but thats part of the charm right?). Whether it’s Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, or just a sunny backyard cookout, these pretzels fit right in with all the red, white, and blue decorations.
Honestly, the hardest part is not eating half of them while they’re setting! They’re salty, sweet, crunchy, and just plain addictive. Plus, they’re so easy to customize if you wanna mix it up a bit with different sprinkle shapes or even drizzle on some extra colors. However you decorate them, these pretzel rods are sure to bring a little extra sparkle to your summer celebrations!

Ingredients
-
12 pretzel rods — These are the perfect base for holding all that colorful candy coating and festive sprinkles.
-
½ cup of red candy melts — Bright and bold, the red candy melts add that classic pop of patriotic color.
-
½ cup of white candy melts — The white candy melts bring a clean, crisp contrast to the red and blue.
-
½ cup of blue candy melts — Rich blue candy melts finish off the trio of vibrant summer shades.
-
2 tablespoons of patriotic sprinkles (red, white, and blue) — A generous sprinkle of these adds the perfect festive touch and a little extra crunch!

Step-by-Step Instructions
You can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This will be where you lay the dipped pretzels to set.
2. Work with one color of candy melts at a time.
3. Place ½ cup of candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 50% power or on the defrost setting for 30 seconds, then stir.
4. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until the candy melts are fully melted and smooth.

5. Dip one pretzel rod into the melted candy, tilting the bowl and using a spoon to help cover the pretzel evenly. Coat about half the length of the pretzel rod or as much as you’d like.

6. Gently shake off any excess candy melt before placing the pretzel rod on the parchment paper.
7. While the candy coating is still wet, add the patriotic sprinkles. You can sprinkle them by hand or roll the candy-coated section in a bowl of sprinkles for more coverage.

8. Let the pretzels sit at room temperature until the candy coating hardens, about 15 to 30 minutes. For faster setting, place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes.
9. Once the candy melts have set, serve the pretzel rods. If not serving right away, store them in an airtight container at room temperature to keep the pretzels crisp.

Tips for the Perfect Red, White & Blue Pretzel Rods
-
Use fresh pretzel rods: Make sure your pretzels are fresh and crisp for the best crunch and flavor.
-
Melt candy melts slowly: Always melt the candy melts at 50% power and stir often to prevent them from seizing or burning.
-
Work with one color at a time: This keeps the candy melts smooth and prevents them from hardening before you’re ready.
-
Tilt the bowl for easier dipping: Tilting your bowl slightly helps coat the pretzels more evenly without needing too much candy melt.
-
Decorate while the candy is wet: Sprinkle the decorations immediately after dipping, before the candy hardens, so they stick properly.
-
Use a spoon for better coverage: If the melts are a little thick, use a spoon to drizzle and spread them over the pretzels.
-
Chill for faster setting: Pop the dipped pretzels in the fridge for about 10 minutes if you want them to set up quickly.
-
Have all your supplies ready: Since the candy coating sets fast, having your sprinkles, parchment paper, and everything else prepped will make the process smoother.
-
Store properly: Once set, keep the pretzel rods in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them crisp.

Get Creative!
-
Add colorful drizzle: After the first layer sets, drizzle a different candy melt color over the top for an extra festive look.
-
Mix up the sprinkles: Try star-shaped sprinkles, glittery sugar, or even edible confetti for a different vibe.
-
Double dip for extra color: Dip the pretzel in one color, let it set, then dip halfway in another color for a layered effect.
-
Try different chocolate flavors: Use vanilla, strawberry, or even blue raspberry-flavored melts to add a subtle twist.
-
Use mini pretzel rods: Make bite-sized versions perfect for little hands or snack platters.
-
Create a themed platter: Pair your red, white, and blue pretzel rods with matching cupcakes, cookies, and fruit for a full patriotic spread.
-
Personalize with tags: Wrap each pretzel rod in a clear bag, tie with ribbon, and add a little name tag for party favors or gifts.

Serving & Storing
-
Let them set completely: Make sure the candy coating is fully hardened before serving or packing them up to avoid any smudges.
-
Display in a festive jar or vase: Stand the pretzel rods upright in a mason jar, festive cup, or small vase for an eye-catching (and easy!) centerpiece.
-
Keep them cool: If you’re serving outside in the summer heat, try to keep the pretzels in a shaded spot so the candy doesn’t melt.
-
Store in an airtight container: Once the candy has set, store the pretzel rods in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them fresh and crisp.
-
Layer with parchment paper: If you’re stacking them in a container, place a sheet of parchment paper between each layer to prevent them from sticking together.
-
Best enjoyed within a week: While they’ll stay safe to eat longer, they taste the freshest and crunchiest if eaten within 5–7 days.
