Patriotic Chocolate Bark: Easy Red, White, and Blue Treat!
I always look forward to summer holidays because it’s a great excuse to get creative in the kitchen. With three kids at home, I’m always looking for recipes that are both easy and fun to make together – and this Red, White, and Blue Chocolate Bark fits perfectly! My kids loved helping drizzle on the colorful candy melts and sprinkling stars and M&Ms all over the top.
This chocolate bark recipe was inspired by memories from when I was little, and we’d celebrate the 4th of July at my grandparents house. There were always plenty of desserts, but nothing quite as bright and patriotic as this treat. I love that it takes only a few minutes of hands-on prep time, and it turns out looking so festive and cheerful.
If you’re looking for something simple but special to serve at your next summer get-together, you’ll definately want to give this chocolate bark a try. It’s sweet, crunchy, and guaranteed to impress both kids and adults alike!

Ingredients
I used a 13×9 pan for this recipe.
-
2 cups white chocolate morsels: These melt beautifully and create a sweet, creamy layer that balances out the richer chocolate flavors.
-
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate morsels: I like using semi-sweet morsels as my base because it gives the bark a delicious, chocolaty depth without being overly sweet.
-
1/2 cup red candy melts: These vibrant red candy melts add a festive pop of color that my kids always love drizzling on.
-
1/2 cup white candy melts: A drizzle of white candy melts helps create that pretty marbled effect, giving each piece a unique design.
-
1/2 cup blue candy melts: The blue candy melts are essential for giving the bark its patriotic flair and making the colors truly stand out.
-
1 tbsp red, white, and blue star sprinkles: Sprinkles instantly turn the chocolate bark into a celebration—plus, my little ones always insist on adding extras!
-
1/4 cup red, white, and blue M&Ms: Adding M&Ms makes every bite crunchy and irresistable, and it’s a fun surprise my family always looks forward to.

1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
2. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate morsels in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring after each interval until smooth.

3. Pour the melted semi-sweet chocolate onto the prepared tray, spreading it into an even layer.
4. Allow this layer to harden completely, placing it in the refrigerator if you’d like to speed things up.

5. Melt the white chocolate morsels in the same way, then pour it evenly over the hardened semi-sweet chocolate layer.

6. Let the white chocolate layer harden completely before moving on.
7. Melt the red, white, and blue candy melts separately, then drizzle each color over the white chocolate layer using piping bags or a spoon.

8. Gently swirl the colors together using a toothpick to create a marbled effect before they harden.

9. Sprinkle red, white, and blue star sprinkles and M&Ms on top while the candy melts are still soft enough for decorations to stick.

10. Allow the tray to fully harden at room temperature or refrigerate to set quicker.
11. Once set, lift the chocolate bark from the tray using the parchment paper and break it into pieces by hand.

12. Your colorful chocolate bark is ready – serve immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.

Tips for Making the Perfect Patriotic Chocolate Bark
-
Use good-quality chocolate – The better the chocolate, the better the final flavor. Look for chocolate morsels or bars that melt smoothly and taste rich.
-
Melt slowly and stir often – Whether you’re using a microwave or double boiler, melt the chocolate and candy melts in short bursts and stir frequently to avoid burning.
-
Let each layer set completely – Be patient and let the semi-sweet and white chocolate layers harden fully before adding the next one. This keeps the colors from blending together too much.
-
Don’t over-swirl – When swirling the red, white, and blue melts, a little goes a long way. Over-mixing can cause the colors to muddy rather than pop.
-
Decorate while soft – Add sprinkles and M&Ms while the drizzle is still soft so everything sticks well without falling off later.
-
Refrigerate for quicker setting – If you’re short on time, pop the tray in the fridge between layers or after decorating to speed up the hardening process.
-
Use parchment paper for easy cleanup – It not only keeps the chocolate from sticking but makes it a breeze to lift and break into pieces.
-
Break by hand for fun, rustic pieces – Skip the knife! Breaking the bark by hand gives it that fun, jagged look and makes serving easy.
-
Store properly – Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in a cool spot to prevent melting or softening. The fridge works great during warm weather.
-
Get the kids involved! – This recipe is a blast to make with little helpers. Let them drizzle, swirl, and sprinkle – it’s a fun way to get them in the kitchen.

Get Creative!
-
Switch up the colors for other holidays – Use green and red candy melts for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween, or pastels for Easter. The base recipe stays the same—you just change the colors and decorations!
-
Try different toppings – Swap out M&Ms for mini marshmallows, crushed pretzels, gummy stars, or even freeze-dried fruit for a fun twist on texture and flavor.
-
Add a flavored twist – Stir a drop or two of peppermint, orange, or almond extract into the melted white chocolate layer for an extra boost of flavor.
-
Use cookie cutters for shapes – After the bark sets just slightly, press cookie cutters into the chocolate to cut out stars, hearts, or other themed shapes before it fully hardens.
-
Go all out with sprinkles – Use different shapes, sizes, or metallic sprinkles to really make the bark sparkle and match your celebration style.
-
Make it extra crunchy – Mix in chopped nuts, crushed graham crackers, or toffee bits before spreading the chocolate layers to add more texture.
-
Create mini bark trays – Instead of one big tray, pour the layers into small silicone molds or muffin liners to make individual bark rounds – great for gifting or party favors!

Serving & Storing
-
Serve on a festive platter – Arrange the chocolate bark on a red, white, and blue tray or cake stand to match the theme and make it party-ready.
-
Wrap for gifting – Package a few pieces in clear cellophane bags with ribbon for an easy and cute treat to hand out at BBQs, parades, or fireworks shows.
-
Perfect for dessert tables – Add it to a 4th of July dessert spread alongside cupcakes, cookies, and fruit – it’s eye-catching and easy to grab.
-
Store in an airtight container – Keep the bark fresh by storing it in a sealed container at room temperature in a cool, dry spot.
-
Refrigerate if it’s warm – On hot summer days, pop the container in the fridge to prevent melting and keep the chocolate crisp.
-
Enjoy within a week or two – While it usually doesn’t last long around here, the bark tastes best within about 1 to 2 weeks for peak freshness.
