Pastel Muddy Buddies Recipe
Spring is one of my favorite times of the year to make fun and colorful treats, and these Pastel Muddy Buddies are as festive as they come! There’s something about the soft pastel hues that instantly make me think of blooming flowers, Easter egg hunts, and sunny afternoons spent with my kids. This snack is not only pretty to look at, but it’s also irresistibly sweet, crunchy, and coated in a generous dusting of powdered sugar – because let’s be honest, that’s the best part!
I love how easy this recipe is to customize. By using different colors of melting chocolate, you can create a mix that matches any springtime celebration. Plus, the marshmallow bits and candy-coated chocolates add a little extra fun and texture. My kids love helping with this recipe – especially the shaking part when we toss everything in powdered sugar. It’s one of those recipes that’s just as enjoyable to make as it is to eat, which is always a win in my book!
Whether you’re putting together a festive snack for an Easter gathering, a spring baby shower, or just want a fun treat to brighten up your snack stash, these Muddy Buddies are the perfect pick. They store well in an airtight container, making them great for gifting or munching on throughout the week. So grab your favorite pastel chocolates, and let’s whip up a batch of this sweet, crunchy goodness!

Equipment

- Microwave safe bowl
- Zip Lock bags
- Parchment Paper
- Cookie Sheet
Ingredients
- 6 1/2 Cups Original Chex – The perfect light and crispy base that soaks up all the sweet, colorful goodness!
- 2 Ounces Yellow Melting Chocolate – A sunny, cheerful hue that brings a bright pop of spring to the mix.
- 2 Ounces Green Melting Chocolate – A fresh, pastel green that reminds me of new grass and budding leaves.
- 2 Ounces Blue Melting Chocolate – A soft, sky-blue color that adds a cool and calming touch to the mix.
- 2 Ounces Pink Melting Chocolate – A sweet, rosy pink that feels perfectly festive for spring celebrations.
- 1 Ounce of White Melting Chocolate – Drizzled over the mix for a little extra contrast and a hint of creamy sweetness.
- 2 1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar – The secret to that classic, sweet coating that makes every bite melt in your mouth.
- Marshmallow Bits – Tiny bursts of marshmallowy sweetness that add a fun, playful texture.
- Spring Candy Covered Chocolate – A final festive touch with pastel colors and a satisfying chocolate crunch!

Step-by-Step Instructions
You can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
1. Start by separating the Chex into 5 equal amounts, put each of them into bowls and set it to the bowls to the side.
2. Next place one color of the chocolate melts in microwave safe bowl and melt it in 30 second intervals until its liquid.

3. Pour the chocolate over one of the bowls of Chex mix and mix with a spatula until Chex completely is covered in chocolate.

4. Put 2-3 tablespoons of powdered sugar on the chocolate covered Chex and mix until the all the Chex mixture is fully covered.

5. Next pour the covered mixture on to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper to dry.

6. Repeat these steps for the following three colors and put them on the same sheet cookie sheet. Be sure to clean the spatula in between each new color of chocolate.
7. Spread out the last bowl Chex on a smaller sheet of parchment paper.
8. Melt the white chocolate following the melting instructions above. Put the chocolate in a piping bag, cut a small hole in the tip and drizzle it over the plain Chex.

9. While the drizzle is still wet, pour the marshmallow bits over the Chex.

10. Once all pieces are dry, add the drizzle covered Chex and the spring time candy coated chocolates with the other colored Chex. Mix them all together.

11. Serve and Enjoy!

Tips for Making the Perfect Pastel Muddy Buddies
1. Use Fresh Chex Cereal
Stale cereal can ruin the texture of your mix. Make sure your Chex is fresh and crispy for the best crunch!
2. Melt Chocolate in Short Intervals
When melting the chocolate, heat it in 30-second increments, stirring in between. Overheating can cause it to seize or become grainy.
3. Work Quickly with the Chocolate
Once the chocolate is melted, mix it with the Chex right away before it starts to harden. This ensures an even coating on every piece.
4. Shake Gently but Thoroughly
When adding the powdered sugar, shake the coated Chex in a zip-top bag or gently stir it to fully coat each piece without breaking them.
5. Let Each Color Dry Completely
Spreading each color out on parchment paper allows them to dry properly and prevents the colors from sticking together.
6. Clean Your Utensils Between Colors
Wipe your spatula clean between each batch to avoid color mixing and keep your pastel hues looking bright and distinct.
7. Add the Candy and Marshmallow Bits Last
To keep them from getting too coated in sugar, mix in the spring candy chocolates and marshmallow bits after everything else is dry.
8. Store in an Airtight Container
These will stay fresh for up to a week if stored in an airtight container at room temperature. Perfect for making ahead of time!

Get Creative!
Switch Up the Colors
Use different shades of melting chocolate to match any theme! Try lavender, peach, or even a mix of neons for a fun twist.
Play with Mix-Ins
Instead of (or in addition to) candy-coated chocolates and marshmallow bits, try adding:
– Mini pretzels for a salty-sweet combo
– Shredded coconut for a tropical vibe
– Crushed freeze-dried fruit (like strawberries or raspberries) for a fruity pop
Add a Fun Drizzle
Instead of just white chocolate, drizzle colored candy melts over the finished mix for extra visual appeal and flavor!
Make It a Party Favor
Package individual servings in pastel treat bags or mason jars and tie with a festive ribbon for a cute party gift!
Try a Different Base
Not a fan of Chex? Swap it for:
– Mini rice cakes for a crunchier bite
– Popcorn for a light and airy version
– Bugles or pretzel sticks for a fun texture contrast
Holiday-Themed Versions
Make this recipe work for any occasion:
– Easter: Add tiny chocolate eggs and bunny-shaped sprinkles
– Baby Showers: Use pink or blue hues for a gender reveal treat
– Birthday Parties: Add rainbow sprinkles for a funfetti twist
Flavor It Up
For extra depth of flavor, mix in a drop of vanilla, almond, or coconut extract to your melted chocolate before coating the cereal.
Make It a Snack Mix Bar
Set out bowls of different colors and mix-ins, and let guests build their own personalized muddy buddies mix!

Serving & Storing
Serving Tips
- Perfect for Parties – Serve in a big bowl with a scoop, or in individual cups for easy grab-and-go snacking.
- Make It a Gift – Package in clear treat bags, mason jars, or mini tins with a pastel ribbon for a festive and thoughtful homemade gift.
- Pair with Other Treats – Serve alongside springtime cookies, cupcakes, or a fresh fruit platter for a colorful dessert spread.
- Great for Easter Egg Hunts – Fill small treat bags or plastic eggs for a fun snack during an Easter gathering.
Storing Tips
- Keep It Fresh – Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week to maintain crispiness.
- Avoid Humidity – Moisture can make the powdered sugar coating sticky, so keep the mix in a cool, dry place.
- Refrigeration Not Needed – The chocolate can harden too much in the fridge, making the texture less enjoyable.
- Freeze for Later – If you want to make it ahead, store in a freezer-safe bag for up to two months and let it thaw at room temp before serving.
